St Paul Ski Club
As I sit here writing this amidst an already busy ski jumping season, I can’t help but think of my younger self sitting at home eagerly waiting for my first jumps on snow. I remember always being picked up from school by my dad or Mark Wallace with my friend Brian Wallace to “help” our dads make snow for the jumps we would soon fly off of. Running around the St. Paul Ski Club daydreaming of new jumping suits, fast skis, far jumps and the smiles that would accompany them. Once the snow had fallen and the jumps were prepared it was time to fly! Growing up we always had training Tuesday and Thursday nights in the winter and the St. Paul Ski Club’s classic “Friday Night Tournaments.” Although these days were always a highlight, a few random weekends or days with no school have stood out to me the most. Just my ski jumping friends Ryan Johnson, Christian Friberg, and Brian Wallace, out at the hill with nothing to do but ski jump. I remember how carefree it was, that we had the whole hill to ourselves and could jump until we couldn’t feel our fingers and toes. A quick warm up in the chalet with a bowl of soup and back out on the hill. I remember how we would always try and imitate different world cup ski jumpers flight and inrun techniques, albeit most likely looking the exact same way. Singing our old club theme song on our way up the tower and seeing who could jump the farthest while our dads stood by and watched us enjoy the hills they worked so hard to prepare for us. These were the days that grew my passion for ski jumping and created lifelong friendships, memories and enjoyment of ski jumping in its purest form.
Special thanks to my mom and dad Kris and Dave Edlund, Mark and Kathy Wallace, Paul and Carol Johnson, Dan and Kathy Friberg, Pat Lyons and Jack Myhra and many more, for all the hard work and volunteering at the St. Paul Ski Club over the years that helped make these memories I cherish so deeply possible. Also to my brothers David and Joey Edlund who continue to make the snow fly at the hill and make these priceless memories available for the next generation of St. Paul Ski Club jumpers. Have one!
The St. Paul Ski Club Ski Jumpers song:
For it’s underneath the take off,
On every Sunday morn,
There comes a bunch of jolly skiers,
To jump and show their form.
Oh, the big and small,
The small and big,
They’re all dressed up
In a skier’s rig.
They Jump until they’re blue,
And when they all get through,
The President pulls the string and
They drop their skis and sing,
Ja, Ja, ve skal ha,
Lutefisk o lefse,
Lutefisk of lefse,
Ja, Ja, ve skal ha,
Lutefisk o lefse
Bren o vin o snus!
Hey!
